Toddler Social Skills | How Sharing & Friendship Really Develop
How toddler social skills actually develop — sharing, turn-taking, empathy, friendship. Realistic expectations by age with calm coaching tips. 8+ FAQs.
Real sharing, turn-taking and empathy develop slowly — mostly after age 3, and continuing to mature well into primary school. Before that, expect parallel play (playing side-by-side, not together), snatching, meltdowns over toys, and lots of 'MINE!'. This isn't rudeness or bad parenting — it's exactly where their brain is. Your job is to coach in the moment, not enforce social rules they can't yet grasp.
