Cradle Cap in Babies: Causes & Safe Treatment | Parenting Hub
Cradle cap is the harmless yellow, greasy scale you see on a baby's scalp. How it differs from eczema, what's safe to use, and when to see a doctor.
Yellow, waxy patches on baby's scalp? It's almost always cradle cap — common, harmless and usually clears on its own.
What cradle cap is
Cradle cap (seborrhoeic dermatitis) is a yellow or brown, greasy or waxy scale that builds up on a baby's scalp, eyebrows or behind the ears. It usually appears in the first 3 months, doesn't itch, and isn't caused by poor hygiene.
Most cases settle by 6–12 months without any treatment. Skin underneath isn't usually red or inflamed — if it is, that may be eczema instead.
Safe ways to loosen the scale
If you'd like to soften and lift the flakes, the gentlest approach is:
- Massage a small amount of plain, fragrance-free oil (olive, almond or baby oil) into the scalp 30 minutes before bath.
- Soften further in the bath with warm water, then brush gently with a soft baby brush to lift loose flakes.
- Wash with a mild baby shampoo, rinse well, and pat dry — repeat once or twice a week.
- Don't pick at attached scale. If it doesn't lift easily, leave it for next time.
When to see a doctor
Most cradle cap doesn't need any medical input. Book a GP visit if the patches are red, weeping or smelly, if they spread to the body, or if baby seems itchy or unsettled — that points more toward eczema or an infection that may need a prescription cream.
When to seek help
- Scalp becomes red, hot, weeping or smelly (possible infection)
- Rash spreads to face, neck or body and looks dry/itchy (possible eczema)
- Baby develops a fever alongside the scalp changes
Common questions
Can I use coconut oil for cradle cap?
Yes — a small amount of plain coconut, olive or almond oil massaged in 30 minutes before bath is a safe, gentle way to soften the scale. Use a fragrance-free oil and a soft brush to lift the loosened flakes.
Will cradle cap leave bald patches?
No. Hair sometimes comes away with the loosened scale, but the follicles aren't damaged and hair regrows normally as the cradle cap clears.
