Big Babies & Growth Tracking | Parenting Hub
A baby tracking above the 97th percentile can still be perfectly healthy. What matters is the pattern over time.
Big babies are usually healthy. Family size, genetics and feeding all play a role.
What's normal
Tall, big-boned families often have larger babies. A baby above the 97th percentile who is feeding well, active and tracking along their own curve usually doesn't need any change.
What's worth checking
- Sudden jump up across percentile lines
- Bottle-fed baby finishing every bottle very fast
- Feeds offered for comfort rather than hunger
When to ask for a review
Speak with your MCH nurse if you're worried about overfeeding, or if growth changes rapidly without a clear reason.
When to seek help
- Any sudden change that worries you or feels off for your baby.
- Poor feeding, unusual sleepiness, or persistent irritability.
- Fever in a baby under 3 months, or any symptom that worsens quickly.
Common questions
Can you overfeed a breastfed baby?
It's very unusual. Breastfeeding is responsive to baby's needs — follow cues rather than the clock.
