Growth: Breastfed vs Formula-fed Babies | Parenting Hub
Breastfed and formula-fed babies grow slightly differently. Both can be perfectly healthy.
WHO growth charts are based on breastfed babies. Formula-fed babies often gain a little faster after the first few months.
Typical patterns
- Both groups grow similarly in the first 3–4 months
- Formula-fed babies often gain a bit more after 4 months
- Breastfed babies may track closer to their own curve
What to focus on
Forget comparisons with other babies. Look for steady growth along your baby's own line, regular wet and dirty nappies, and an alert, active baby.
When to seek help
- Any sudden change that worries you or feels off for your baby.
- Poor feeding, unusual sleepiness, or persistent irritability.
- Fever in a baby under 3 months, or any symptom that worsens quickly.
Common questions
Should I top up with formula?
Not based on the chart alone. Speak with an MCH nurse or IBCLC before adding top-ups.
