Baby Common Cold: Symptoms & Home Care | Parenting Hub
Babies catch 6–10 colds a year. Here's what's normal, what helps, and when a simple cold needs a doctor's review.
Most baby colds settle in 7–10 days. Saline drops, fluids and cuddles do most of the work — antibiotics don't.
What to expect
Runny or blocked nose, mild cough, low-grade fever and a bit of fussiness for 7–10 days. Mucus often turns from clear to yellow or green as the cold runs its course — that's normal and not a sign of bacterial infection.
What helps
Comfort and fluids — that's the toolkit.
- Offer extra breast or formula feeds (smaller, more often if blocked nose)
- Saline drops or spray before feeds and sleep to loosen mucus
- Cool-mist humidifier or steamy bathroom
- Upright cuddles can ease a blocked nose
What to avoid
Cough and cold medicines aren't recommended under 6 years. Honey isn't safe under 12 months. Decongestant rubs containing camphor or menthol aren't recommended for babies.
When to seek help
- Any fever in a baby under 3 months
- Fast, laboured or noisy breathing
- Feeding less than half normal, fewer wet nappies
- Cold lasting more than 10–14 days or suddenly worsening
Common questions
Are antibiotics needed?
No — colds are viral. Antibiotics only help if a secondary bacterial infection (e.g. ear, chest) develops.
