Baby Cough: Types, Causes & When to See a Doctor | Parenting Hub

A baby's cough can sound alarming. Common types (dry, wet, barking, whooping), what they usually mean, and when a cough needs urgent care.

Coughs are how babies clear their airways. The sound of the cough often points to the cause — here's how to tell what's behind it and when to seek help.

Types of cough

The sound and timing of a cough offer big clues.

  • Dry cough: often a cold, viral chest infection or post-nasal drip
  • Wet/chesty cough: usually a cold clearing or chest infection
  • Barking (seal-like) cough: croup — louder at night, often with hoarse voice
  • Whooping (long inspiratory 'whoop' after a coughing fit, sometimes vomiting): whooping cough (pertussis) — urgent
  • Sudden cough with choking: possible inhaled object — emergency
  • Wheezy cough with fast breathing: possible bronchiolitis or asthma — urgent in babies

What helps at home

Most coughs are viral and settle on their own.

  • Plenty of fluids — breast, formula, or water (over 6 months)
  • Saline nose drops to clear blockage
  • Upright cuddles; steam from a warm shower for croup-like coughs
  • Smaller, more frequent feeds
  • Paracetamol for discomfort if needed

What to avoid

Cough medicines are not recommended for young children.

  • Cough syrups and decongestants — not safe under 6 years
  • Honey — never under 12 months (over 12 months a small spoon can soothe)
  • Camphor or menthol rubs — not safe under 2 years

When to see a doctor

See your GP if a cough lasts more than 2 weeks, sounds barking, comes with fever for more than 48 hours, or your baby seems unwell.

When to seek urgent care

Difficulty breathing, blueness, suspected whooping cough, sudden choking, or a baby under 3 months with a cough and fever — call 000 or go to ED.

When to seek help

  • Fast or laboured breathing
  • Ribs sucking in or grunting with each breath
  • Blueness around lips or skin
  • Whooping sound or vomiting after coughing fits
  • Sudden cough after choking on food or small object
  • Fever and cough in a baby under 3 months

Common questions

Why is my baby's cough worse at night?

Lying flat allows mucus to pool in the throat. Croup is also classically worse at night. Upright cuddles and humidified air can help.

Is a barking cough serious?

Barking cough is usually croup. Mild croup can be managed at home, but if breathing is laboured, noisy at rest, or your baby is distressed, get urgent care.
