Baby Cough Types: Dry, Wet, Barking & More | Parenting Hub

Dry, wet, barking, whooping — here's a quick guide to baby cough sounds, likely causes and when to see a doctor.

Cough is a protective reflex. The sound, timing and other symptoms help work out what's going on.

A quick guide

Pair the cough with the other symptoms — fever, feeding, breathing rate.

  • Dry tickle — often early cold or post-viral irritation
  • Wet/rattly — mucus in chest or upper airway, common with cold
  • Barking (seal-like) — croup, usually night-time
  • Whooping with a gasp — possible whooping cough (pertussis)
  • Wheezy — bronchiolitis or asthma-like episode
  • Sudden after eating — possible inhaled food (see choking)

Home care

Saline drops, smaller more frequent feeds, upright cuddles and rest. Avoid cough medicines under 6 years and honey under 12 months.

When to seek help

  • Any cough under 3 months with fever
  • Fast or laboured breathing, sucking in at ribs
  • Whooping or pauses with cough
  • Cough lasting more than 3 weeks
  • Sudden cough after eating or playing with small objects

Common questions

Should I worry about a nighttime cough?

Many coughs are worse at night because mucus pools when lying down. Worsening pattern over days, or breathing difficulty, needs review.
