Baby Croup: Symptoms, Treatment & When to Get Help | Parenting Hub

Croup causes a barking cough and noisy breathing, usually at night. Here's how to settle it and when to call an ambulance.

Croup is a viral upper airway swelling that gives a seal-like barking cough — most cases settle with calm and steroids from a doctor.

What it sounds like

A harsh, seal-like barking cough, often with a hoarse voice and a high-pitched whistle on breathing in (stridor). Usually worse at night.

What to do at home

Stay calm — crying makes airway swelling worse. Sit baby upright on your lap, dim the lights, and offer cuddles. Cool night air or a steamy bathroom may help in the moment. See your GP the same day; a single dose of oral steroid usually settles symptoms.

When to seek help

  • Stridor at rest (not just when crying)
  • Sucking in around the ribs or neck
  • Pale, blue-tinged or grey skin/lips
  • Drooling, can't swallow, leaning forward — call an ambulance
  • Floppy or very drowsy

Common questions

Is croup contagious?

Yes — it's caused by viruses spread through coughs and sneezes.
