Baby wee should be pale yellow with a mild smell. Dark, strong-smelling wee usually means more milk is needed — sometimes it points to a urine infection.
Most common cause: not enough fluid
In babies, that means not enough milk. Offer more frequent feeds and recheck nappies over the next 6–12 hours.
Other causes
- Hot weather, fever, or vomiting/diarrhoea (dehydration)
- Urine infection (UTI) — sometimes the only sign in a baby
- Some medicines or vitamins (rarely)
When to see a doctor
Dark or strong-smelling wee that doesn't improve with extra feeds in 12 hours, or any of the red-flag signs below.
When to seek help
- Fever in a baby under 3 months (always urgent)
- Vomiting, poor feeding or unsettled crying
- Fewer than 6 wet nappies in 24 hours
- Blood in the wee, or cloudy/very smelly wee with fever — GP today
