Baby Burst Eardrum: Signs & Recovery | Parenting Hub

A sudden gush of fluid and sudden pain relief during an ear infection can mean a small eardrum perforation. Most heal on their own.

A burst eardrum often relieves the pain of an ear infection. Most heal in a few weeks — but always see your GP.

What happens

Pressure from infection can cause a small hole in the eardrum. Baby suddenly seems more comfortable, and you may see yellow or blood-tinged fluid in the ear.

What to do

See your GP. Keep the ear dry (no swimming or water in the ear) while it heals. Most small perforations close on their own within a few weeks.

When to seek help

  • Ongoing discharge for more than a few weeks
  • Hearing concerns afterwards
  • Repeated perforations — needs ENT review

Common questions

Can baby still bath?

Yes — just keep water out of the affected ear with a soft cotton plug coated in vaseline if needed, on your GP's advice.
