Baby Earwax: How to Clean Safely | Parenting Hub

Earwax is healthy and self-cleaning. Cotton buds can do more harm than good. Here's how to manage baby earwax safely.

Earwax protects the ear and clears itself. Only wipe what you can see on the outside — never push anything into the canal.

Why earwax matters

Earwax traps dust and bacteria and slowly moves itself out of the canal. It's a sign of healthy ears, not poor hygiene.

Safe cleaning

Keep it simple.

  • Wipe the outer ear with a damp soft cloth at bath time
  • Don't insert cotton buds — they push wax deeper and can scratch the canal
  • Don't use ear candles — they don't work and can burn

When wax becomes a problem

Occasionally wax builds up and muffles hearing, or blocks a doctor's view of the eardrum during a check. Your GP may recommend softening drops or a gentle clinic clean — don't try to remove wax at home.

When to seek help

  • Sudden hearing change
  • Pain, discharge or smell from the ear
  • Bleeding from the ear

Common questions

What about dark or sticky wax?

Colour and texture vary — yellow, brown, dry or sticky can all be normal.
