A hot, red, tender area behind the ear pushing the ear forward is an emergency — go straight to hospital.
What to look for
Mastoiditis is infection of the bone behind the ear, usually as a complication of an untreated or severe middle ear infection. The skin behind the ear is red, hot, tender and swollen. The ear may stick out further than usual. Baby is unwell with fever.
What to do
Don't wait — go straight to the emergency department. Treatment is intravenous antibiotics in hospital, sometimes with surgery.

- Red, hot, tender swelling behind the ear
- Ear pushed forward or downward
- Fever with an unwell baby
- Floppiness, drowsiness or neck stiffness — call emergency
