Baby Nail Care: Trimming Safely | Parenting Hub
Baby nails grow fast and can scratch. Learn how to trim them safely and what to do if you nick the skin.
Soft, fast-growing nails need trimming every few days in the early weeks.
How to trim safely
- Use baby nail scissors, clippers or a file
- Trim when baby is calm, feeding or asleep
- Press the fingertip pad down so you can see the nail edge
- Cut fingernails in a gentle curve, toenails straight across
If you nick the skin
Press a clean cloth firmly until bleeding stops. A small cut will heal on its own. Skip a plaster — small babies can choke on them.
Scratch mittens
Mittens are fine in the early weeks but limit hand exploration — keep nails short instead where you can.
When to seek help
- Any sudden change that worries you or feels off for your baby.
- Poor feeding, unusual sleepiness, or persistent irritability.
- Fever in a baby under 3 months, or any symptom that worsens quickly.
