Object Up Baby's Nose: What to Do | Parenting Hub
Small beads, food or paper up baby's nose need GP removal. Here's first aid and what not to do.
If something is stuck up baby's nose, don't probe — see your GP or emergency department for safe removal.
Signs
One-sided runny nose, foul-smelling discharge, repeated sneezing or visible object — all suggest something is up the nose.
What to do
Keep baby calm. Don't try tweezers, cotton buds or to push it out — you can push it deeper. If baby is old enough, ask them to blow their nose gently while you close the other nostril. Otherwise, head to your GP or emergency department.
When to seek help
- Button battery up the nose — go straight to emergency
- Magnet or sharp object — emergency
- Difficulty breathing or unwell
Common questions
Can it pass on its own?
Soft food might, but most objects need removal — leaving them risks infection.
