Oversupply & Fast Let-Down: Signs & How to Manage | Parenting Hub

If your baby splutters, pulls off and the milk sprays, you may have oversupply or a fast let-down. Simple positioning changes usually help.

Spraying milk, a coughing baby, green frothy poo and constant feeds can all point to oversupply or a fast let-down. The fix is usually positioning, not less milk.

Signs of oversupply / fast let-down

  • Baby splutters, coughs or pulls off in the first minute
  • Milk sprays when baby comes off
  • Baby gulps and gasps
  • Green, frothy or explosive poo
  • Lots of wind, fussy baby, short feeds
  • Engorgement and recurrent blocked ducts

What helps

  • Laid-back or side-lying positions so baby works against gravity
  • Hand-express until the first let-down passes, then latch
  • Feed on one breast per feed (block feeding) — only with IBCLC guidance, as it can drop supply too far
  • Burp often
  • A calm, dim room reduces stimulation

When to get help

Persistent oversupply that affects baby's weight or your comfort needs an IBCLC review — block feeding done wrong can swing into low supply.

When to seek help

  • Baby losing weight despite frequent feeds
  • Blood in baby's poo
  • Recurrent mastitis
  • Baby refusing the breast altogether

Common questions

Is green poo a problem?

Often it's just the foremilk/hindmilk balance from fast let-down. If baby is gaining well and content between feeds, it's usually not concerning.

Should I pump to relieve pressure?

Sparingly — pumping tells your body to make more. Hand-express just enough for comfort instead.
