Overtired Baby: How to Recognise & Settle | Parenting Hub

An overtired baby is harder to settle, not easier. How to spot tired cues early, what to do when baby is past tired, and how to prevent it.

When babies stay awake too long, stress hormones rise and sleep becomes harder, not easier. Here's how to spot the signs and gently bring baby back to calm.

Why overtiredness happens

If a baby stays awake past the point of being tired, the body releases cortisol and adrenaline to keep them going. This 'second wind' makes them seem wired and active, but the chemistry actually blocks easy settling and shortens the sleep that follows.

Early vs late tired cues

Aim to settle baby at the early cues — late cues mean you're already chasing the window.

  • Early: staring, glazed eyes, slowing down, quieter, looking away
  • Mid: yawning, rubbing eyes or ears, fussing, clinginess
  • Late (overtired): crying, arching, jerky movements, hyperactivity, hard to make eye contact

Settling an overtired baby

The goal is to bring stress levels down before sleep.

  • Move to a dark, quiet room and lower the stimulation
  • Hold baby close, swaddle or sleep bag, gentle rocking or swaying
  • Steady white noise can mask other sounds and soothe
  • Offer a feed if due — sucking is calming
  • Stay calm yourself; babies pick up on adult stress
  • Be ready for the next sleep to be shorter, then offer an earlier bedtime to 'catch up'

Preventing it

Use age-appropriate wake windows as a guide, not a rule. Watch your baby more than the clock.

  • 0–3 months: 45–90 minutes awake
  • 3–6 months: 1.5–2.5 hours
  • 6–9 months: 2–3 hours
  • 9–12 months: 3–4 hours

When to see a doctor

If your baby is frequently unsettled, in pain, not feeding, or you're not coping with broken sleep, see your maternal child health nurse or GP.

When to seek urgent care

High-pitched cry, inconsolable crying with fever, or any sign of breathing difficulty needs urgent assessment.

When to seek help

  • Inconsolable crying lasting more than 2 hours
  • Fever in a baby under 3 months
  • High-pitched or unusual cry
  • Baby not feeding or very lethargic

Common questions

Why won't my overtired baby sleep?

Stress hormones rise when babies stay awake too long, making it physically harder to settle. The fix is calming and lower stimulation, not waiting longer.

Is it bad to let an overtired baby cry?

Leaving an overtired baby to cry alone usually makes settling harder. Stay with them, calm the environment, and help them wind down.
