Red Spot in Baby's Eye: Subconjunctival Haemorrhage | Parenting Hub
A bright red patch on the white of the eye looks alarming but is usually harmless. Learn when it's fine and when to see a doctor.
A flat, bright red patch on the white of the eye is usually a tiny burst blood vessel — common after birth or hard crying and clears in 1–2 weeks.
What it looks like
A flat, bright red patch sits on the white of the eye. Baby isn't bothered by it, the pupil and iris look normal, and there's no discharge.
It's common after the squeeze of birth, hard crying, coughing or a small bump.
What to do
Nothing — it fades on its own over 1–2 weeks as the body reabsorbs the blood. No drops needed.
When to seek help
- After a head injury or fall
- Pain, discharge or a red eye (not just a red patch)
- Repeated bleeds in different places (skin, gums) — discuss with GP
Common questions
Will it spread?
It may look bigger before it fades, as the blood spreads under the thin surface. That's normal.
