Toddler Sleep Regressions: 18 Months & 2 Years | Parenting Hub

Toddler sleep often gets harder around 18 months and 2 years. Big developmental and emotional leaps are behind it — here's how to ride them.

Two later sleep waves — around 18 months and 2 years — catch many parents by surprise. Language, independence and big fears are usually behind them.

The 18-month wave

  • Language explosion + first big 'no'
  • Separation anxiety returns
  • Molars and 2-year molars start to push through
  • Toddler now has the will to resist bedtime

The 2-year wave

  • Imagination develops — first real fears (dark, monsters)
  • Drop to 1 nap fully consolidated
  • Often coincides with potty training or a new sibling
  • May start climbing out of the cot

What helps

  • Hold the routine — same order, same time, every night
  • Big focused 1:1 connection in the day
  • Validate fears: night light, dream spray, 'monster check'
  • Avoid starting new things mid-regression (new bed, room move)
  • Two clear choices at bedtime (pyjamas, book) — gives autonomy without losing the boundary

When to seek help

  • Significant developmental regression alongside sleep change — see GP
  • Loud snoring or stop-breathing pauses
  • Persistent night terrors or self-harm during sleep

Common questions

Should I move my toddler to a bed?

Usually not in the middle of a regression. Only move when safety requires it (climbing out repeatedly), and after age 2.5–3 ideally.
