Baby Teeth: Order and Timing | Parenting Hub
Most babies cut their first tooth between 6 and 10 months. Learn the usual order, normal variations and when to see a dentist.
All 20 baby teeth usually appear by age 3. The order is more predictable than the timing.
Usual order
- Bottom front teeth: 6–10 months
- Top front teeth: 8–12 months
- Top and bottom lateral incisors: 9–16 months
- First molars: 13–19 months
- Canines: 16–23 months
- Second molars: 23–33 months
Caring for new teeth
- Wipe gums with a soft cloth from birth
- Brush with a soft baby brush and water as soon as teeth appear
- From 18 months, use a small smear of low-fluoride toothpaste
- First dental check by 12 months or within 6 months of the first tooth
When to see a dentist
See a dentist if teeth look discoloured, chipped or come in very out of order, or if no teeth have appeared by 18 months.
When to seek help
- Any sudden change that worries you or feels off for your baby.
- Poor feeding, unusual sleepiness, or persistent irritability.
- Fever in a baby under 3 months, or any symptom that worsens quickly.
