Undigested Food in Baby Poo: Is It Normal? | Parenting Hub

Carrot, sweetcorn, blueberry skins, spinach — finding bits of food in baby's nappy is completely normal in the early months of solids.

Whole peas, orange carrot streaks, blueberry skins in the nappy — this is normal, not a sign your baby can't digest food.

Why it happens

Babies' guts move food through quickly and they don't chew well yet. Tough plant fibres (skins, seeds, sweetcorn kernels) often come out almost whole. Their bodies absorb the nutrients they need — the visible bits are just fibre.

What's normal to see

  • Bright orange streaks from carrot or pumpkin
  • Whole peas, sweetcorn kernels, blueberry skins
  • Dark green spinach flecks
  • Red from beetroot or tomato

When to take a second look

Slimy mucus, watery diarrhoea or blood is different — not just undigested food. See our diarrhoea and blood-in-stool articles.

When to seek help

  • Persistent watery diarrhoea (>24 hours)
  • Blood or persistent mucus
  • Poor weight gain or hives after a new food

Common questions

Does this mean I should puree more?

Not necessarily. Babies need exposure to texture. As long as baby is growing and well, soft finger foods are fine even if some comes out whole.
