How Many Wet Nappies Should a Baby Have? | Parenting Hub
Wet nappies are the most reliable home sign of hydration in babies. Here's how many to expect — newborn to toddler.
Wet nappies are the most reliable home sign that your baby is getting enough milk. Here's what to expect — and what to do if numbers drop.
First week
Roughly one wet nappy per day of life — day 1 = 1, day 4 = 4, building to 6+ heavy ones by day 5–7.
From day 7 onward
- At least 6 heavy wet nappies in 24 hours
- Pale or colourless urine, only mild smell
- Disposable nappies should feel heavy with weight (3 tablespoons of water gives a sense of 'heavy')
What 'heavy' means
Modern nappies absorb so much it's hard to tell — tip in 3 tablespoons (45 ml) of water to feel a 'wet' nappy. Anything noticeably heavier than this counts.
When to seek help
- Fewer than 6 wet nappies in 24 hours after day 5
- Dark yellow or strong-smelling urine
- Dry mouth, sunken fontanelle, no tears when crying
- Lethargy, less responsive — ED now
Common questions
Hot day — fewer wet nappies, is that OK?
Offer extra feeds. If wet nappies stay low for more than half a day, see your GP.
My toddler is potty training — how do I track?
Track wees per day instead — aim for 5–6 in toddlers, with pale urine.
