Yellow Seedy Baby Poo: Is It Normal? | Parenting Hub

Mustard-yellow, seedy poo is the textbook healthy breastfed nappy. Here's why it looks that way and when to take notice.

Mustard-yellow with little seed-like flecks is the classic breastfed poo. It's a great sign feeding is going well.

What the 'seeds' are

Tiny pale flecks are undigested milk fat. They look like sesame seeds or curds. Completely normal in breastfed babies — and not a sign baby can't digest something.

Colour range

From pale yellow through mustard to slightly orange or green. All normal. Colour can change day to day with what mum eats.

When this changes

Once you introduce formula or solids, expect poo to become thicker, browner and stronger smelling. Yellow seedy poo into the second half of the first year (without solids) is also normal.

When to seek help

  • Watery yellow poo more than 6–8 times a day (possible diarrhoea)
  • Blood or large amounts of mucus
  • Sudden change to pale/chalky

Common questions

Why is my baby's poo so liquid?

Breastmilk is mostly water and is fully absorbed — so poo is naturally loose. As long as wet nappies and weight are good, runny mustard poo is healthy.
